BASF recognizes its site in McIntosh for outstanding safety program
MCINTOSH, AL, April 14, 2014 – A team from BASF’s McIntosh, Alabama, site was named a winner of the company’s Journey Innovations Team Award, which recognizes innovative contributions to Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) excellence at BASF.
McIntosh was one of two BASF sites recognized through the award program this year. The other site was in Wyandotte, Michigan. The award was presented to both teams during a special ceremony at BASF’s North America headquarters in Florham Park, New Jersey.
The McIntosh site project was selected from among 30 submissions for achieving sustainable results in the areas of occupational safety, contractor safety and environmental and economic benefit. In addition, the project elements could be easily adapted by other BASF sites.
The McIntosh team created a pocket-sized card that contractors and employees fill out prior to performing a job.
The “BEST” (Be Entirely Safe Today) card makes it easy to document safety issues and to trade notes, giving every individual a chance to take ownership of his or her personal safety. As a result of the program, the site has seen greater overall safety awareness and a significant decrease in employee injuries.
“At BASF, even one employee injury is considered one too many. Through our BEST program, we see a tremendous improvement in the safety attitude of our colleagues,” said team member Barton Turner, EHS Site Services.
“The BEST card program has made a positive difference in the way our employees and contractors perform their jobs. This is a great accomplishment for our site and I’m proud of the teamwork that went into making this successful,” said Jeff Mundell, Maintenance Manager for BASF’s McIntosh site.
